Antique lighting & Art Deco lamps

From a single reading lamp to a group of hotel pendants, compare proportions, fittings and condition before choosing a light.

This former catalogue address now hosts an editorial guide. The object mentioned in the old listing is not advertised as available.

Choose the type of light first

A desk lamp, a chandelier and a wall light solve different spatial problems. Start with the intended location and the role of the light: task, ambient or decorative. Measure the available height, reach and footprint, then add the position of furniture and circulation routes. This gives you a practical comparison between objects photographed at different scales. The most compelling silhouette still needs to work in the room.

Treat style and attribution separately

An Art Deco appearance does not establish a maker or production date. Ask for photographs of marks, mountings and components, with the documentation supporting any attribution. Names in archived listing addresses are research leads, not authentication. Record replaced shades, converted bases and other alterations explicitly. This makes a decorative choice easier to assess and keeps uncertain history from becoming a confident sales claim.

Prepare for missing parts and installation

For a replacement shade, begin with the fitting diameter and profile rather than colour alone. Include a photograph of the complete light so a researcher can consider balance as well as compatibility. Have electrical equipment, mounting and the intended installation assessed by a qualified professional before use. A photograph showing a lamp switched on is not a complete inspection record. Discuss packing and specialist work before treating the purchase price as the final project cost.

Make a trade selection repeatable

Interior designers and hospitality buyers benefit from an approved reference: acceptable height range, finishes, variation between examples and the information needed for client approval. Test one combination in its intended setting before searching for several related pieces. Confirm availability, delivery and responsibilities separately for each proposal. A coherent lighting scheme can include different vintage objects when the selection rule is clear and the practical checks are documented.
