Antique plates: shapes, materials and uses

Dinner plates, soup plates, dessert plates and decorative wall plates do not answer the same need.

This former catalogue address now hosts an editorial guide. The object mentioned in the old listing is not advertised as available.

Choose the function first

Dinner plates, soup plates, dessert plates and decorative wall plates do not answer the same need. Record diameter, depth and the width of the rim before comparing patterns. A clear functional list makes it easier to decide which pieces belong in a collection and which merely look attractive beside it.

Record the face and the reverse

Ask for individual photographs of both sides, the edges and any marks. Note repairs and differences between examples in the same group. A maker’s name or a familiar decoration should be supported by evidence when attribution matters. Keep the original description alongside the images rather than treating it as a substitute for them.

Prepare for additions

Choose one characteristic that future pieces should share, such as a colour range or dimensions. This can offer more flexibility than insisting on a single pattern. Confirm suitability for food use where relevant; a visually appealing old plate is not automatically suitable for a restaurant’s cleaning and service routine. Pieces reserved for display should be identified accordingly.
